Two SEU icons – Brother Simon Scribner and the Main Building
In this photograph, university alumnus T.A. Paulissen and Brother Simon Scribner
enjoy a stroll across the campus in the early 1960s. Brother Simon came to St.
Edward’s in 1946 and was among the first Holy Cross Brothers to take over
the administration of the university from the Holy Cross priests. Now a Professor
Emeritus, Brother Simon taught English and, at various times, held other positions
such as Dean of Studies and Vice President - Director of Student Activities. In
1957, he was honored with a mayoral proclamation of a “Brother Simon Scribner
Day,” and was recognized by the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation as the “Piper
Professor of 1968.” In 1970, he was selected to appear in Outstanding Educators
of America. Brother Simon has also gained recognition as an artist and currently
resides on campus as a self-proclaimed “Artist in Residence.” Much
revered by the university community, Brother Simon is truly a St. Edward’s
treasure.
