Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel is highly recognizable in this
February, 1963 photograph of students engaged in a snowball fight. But what is
that building next door to the chapel?
The building was purchased from war surplus in 1948, moved to campus as a
dormitory for the Brothers and called St. Joseph’s Hall. The Brothers
lived in the building from 1948 until 1961 when the current St. Joseph’s
Hall was completed. By the time this photograph was taken in 1963, the building
was called the Annex and had begun to take on a reputation for providing fine
accommodations for overflow students as witnessed in the school newspaper article
below.
"Fall, 1963, and the Annex. The venerable old St. Joseph's
Hall has again been pressed into service as the residence for 21 lucky boarders.
This year, these few students will enjoy living in the great American tradition.
Tradition has it that the Annex was used in the American Revolution. Thus, the
student is close to the past, and close to nature. All rooms are private and
come equipped with lots of modern gadgets, such as light, running water, and
glass windows. Sanitary facilities are provided, done in the most tasteful blue
tile. The hall floor is covered in a sort of dusky colored linoleum and the walls
are paneled in oak. Mail being directed to the students in the Annex can affectionately
be addressed to “ Withering Heights” and it will promptly be delivered."
