Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary on the St. Edward’s campus,
1967
The year 2006 marks the 40th anniversary of the arrival of the Sisters of
the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM), and of women students, on the St. Edward’s
University campus. Early in 1966 the first of the sisters, Sister Anne Virginia
Bowling, arrived to direct Maryhill College, a coordinate college for women.
Other IHM sisters soon followed as teachers and administrators of the new women’s
college. When classes opened on September 16, 1966, seventy women were enrolled
in Maryhill. By 1970 the women’s college enrollment was approaching 200.
The campus community began calling for a unitary system and Maryhill College
became part of a co-educational St. Edward’s University. Although the experiment
with a separate women’s college lasted only four years, the IHM sisters
have continued to play an important role in the university.
