Bath time at SEU

There is obviously a story behind this engaging photograph. The SEU freshman beanies worn by two of the participants and the brands of laundry products they are using to bathe this hapless pup establish the time period as the 1950s or early 1960s.

Can anyone identify the participants, location and circumstances?
