The 1901 St. Edward’s College Football Team coached by Billy Disch
(upper right)
From 1894 (when the first recorded game was played) until 1939 (when the program
was cancelled for financial reasons), St. Edward’s fielded competitive football
teams. In the early days, games were played mostly against high schools and academies,
but by 1925, when St. Edward’s became a university, the team was also competing
against much bigger schools such as Texas A&M, Baylor and the University of
Texas. Over the years the team played under three different names: the Saints,
the Tigers (1933), and the Crusaders (1939). SEU was champion of the Texas Conference
(NAIA) in 1933, and co-champion in 1939.
