The area around St. Edward’s appears quite different today than it did
in 1918, although there are several identifiable landmarks in this photograph.
The Main Building and Holy Cross Hall are evident in the center of the photograph.
The road running left to right across the middle of the photo is Congress Ave.,
called the San Antonio Road at the time. The road running from the San Antonio
Road in front of the Main Building and toward the top of the picture is the road
to the Doyle Farm. The farmhouse was located in the trees at the top of the photograph
near the end of the road. St. Edward’s originally owned nearly 600 acres
in south Austin – 398 acres donated by Mary Doyle in 1873 and the 123 acre
hilltop the University now stands on which was purchased from Colonel Willis
Robards in 1872.
