“From 1850 to 1941 and back again.”
Paul Laurent’s horse Frank charges into action in the service of the CAA student pilots (see Picture of the Month, March 2006 and March 2007).
“Distance from the campus to the University airport is little short of a mile. Shortest distance between these two points, when cars are scarce, is made on the back of a horse. And cars are scarce, so pilot Garaghety, Farley, Walsh, or Reynolds borrows Frank, Paul Laurent’s not-too-particular-horse, and daily makes the trek.
“Arriving at the airport the horseman by necessity tethers his mount and hops in the training plane for an hour of flying. After sixty minutes of jockeying the Porterfield the Lochinvar of the airways drops down, bestrides his steed, and strengthens the cowboy’s theory that you can’t replace the horse.’
