Finding Monologues and Dialogues in the Catalog

The library has over 50 books of monologues, and that collection grows every year. To locate these books:

Select “Subject” under Search Options on the main catalog search screen.
Type “Monologues” or “Dialogues” into the search box.
You will get a list of all library books that are tagged with the “Monologues” or  “Dialogues” subject heading.  Most books of monologues, dialogues, and scenes have call numbers beginning with PN2080.  You can browse the list in the online catalog or locate PN2080 in the stacks and browse the shelves.

Finding Plays Return to Top
To find a play if you know the title

For best results, go to the library catalog and enter the title of your play into the Advanced Keyword Search. This strategy will pull up individual copies of plays as well as anthologies, collected works, or issues of the journal American Theatre that contain your play. You may also see literary criticism regarding your play come up. If you find results that are not relevant, try adding the last name of the playright to your search.

NOTE: If you use the TITLE search option, you will only pull up copies of a play that are published in individual volumes.

To find plays by a specific playright:

Go to the library catalog and select AUTHOR. Enter the name of the playright in this format:

LAST NAME, FIRST NAME

You should get a list of works by that particular author. In addition to plays, this list might include other literary works, memoirs, or letters.

If the library does not have the play you need:

You can request copies of plays through Interlibrary Loan, but you will need to ask for a specific publication of the play. To identify a specific copy to request, you can search Amazon or Worldcat for the title of the play. For more information, see the library's Interlibrary Loan page. NOTE: It can take 1-2 weeks for books requested through Interlibrary Loan to come in.

You can also find a copy of the play at another library (such as the University of Texas or the Austin Public Library). You will need a valid Texshare card to check out materials from UT, and an Austin Public Library card or Texshare card to check out materials from the APL. You can request a Texshare card online or get one at the Circulation Desk.

If you have a citation
Search the Periodicals List for the title of the journal. If we have the journal, look to see if we have the date you need. If we do not have the journal or we do not have the date you need, you can fill out an InterLibrary Loan request. It takes about 2 to 7 days to receive materials requested.
