Selecting a topic is the first step in the research process.

If you are having trouble deciding on a topic, talk with your instructor first. He/she can probably offer suggestions.

When choosing a topic, think about the following:

what is the prescribed length of the assignment?
Some topics are too complex for a 3 page paper.
when is the assignment due?
If your paper is due tomorrow morning, it might be a good idea to pick a topic supported by an abundance of readily available books and periodical articles.
how much information is available on the topic?
Topics that are obscure, extremely recent, or are of limited, local interest may be very difficult to support research-wise.

Once you have a topic, librarians here can help determine if there is enough material available to research your topic adequately.
